Review : Cost versus Ease of Use.
If you earn LESS than $54000 then I suggest you look into filing using Freefile, the link can be found on www.irs.gov I have not tried the service so I can't rate its ease of use but the software is free and you can e-file for free as well.

If you earn MORE than $54000 then I suggest using Taxcut over Turbotax. I have used both products and find that both are easy to use, but since Taxcut is much cheaper it's the better buy imo.

How much does e-file cost using the different products. I believe both Taxcut and Turbotax charge around $16-17 per e-file. Federal e-file is unique from state, so you will be paying around $35 if you choose to e-file for both.

I give Taxcut 5 stars for ease of use, but 1 star for charging us to e-file, averages out at 3 stars.

First off, there is very little reason to hire your tax form out to some bozo at H&R Block, and none at all for fiddling about with paper forms, a pencil, and an eraser. The software really does the job. I have been using H&R Block Tax Cut for the past three years, and I favor the basic edition without bells and whistles. Why buy more than you need? I've used Turbotax/Macintax for about 5 years now. It truly pays for itself, and allows me to keep all of my hair, too! I would almost say that it makes doing taxes enjoyable; it has certainly found refunds for me in years I thought I'd have to pay. If you have to file anything beyond a 1040EZ , the Turbotax products are well worth the investment.

Review : No problems, some improvements over last year
I've used H&R Block's tax software (formerly called TaxCut) every year since 1995. Several times when I saw a promotional deal I purchased both TaxCut and TurboTax to compare. I found that TurboTax did not do anything better than TaxCut while costing consistently more. In addition, I like the option of being able to file 5 free Federal e-files as I do taxes for other relatives who are less computer savvy.

If you encounter issues with display, such as not seeing selection boxes, check your screen resolution. Both Windows and Mac minimum requirement for the screen resolution is 1024 x 768 pixels or higher. At a lower resolution H&R Block software will have problem with display such as not properly displaying selection boxes. Screen resolution can be changed on your control panel by change PC's display settings.

This is another great product from the past from Quicken. If you are being audited or you just need to be able to access your old tax files and can't find the program you used to prepare them, this is the way to go. As always, it's an easy to use program; just follow the onscreen instructions and it will be ready to use in a few minutes. Note that it is for Windows 95/98/NT 4.0. It will probably run ok on XP, as well, possibly in compatible mode on Win 7. This Deluxe version has many extra features not found in the regular version. You might still be able to get technical support and for that make sure you get the access numbers on the back of the folder. For tax year 1999.

I have been using Quicken 2008 Deluxe for the past 3 years.

The process of sunsetting older versions is annoying, but ultimately necessary I believe. This allows the product staff to focus on making new versions better vs. endless patching of legacy products. I think staying current with this type of application is particularly important since it holds so much of your personal financial data. You really do want the latest so that encryption standards and security settings are at their maximum. Especially if you use the one step update with Quicken and the password vault.

A note on upgrading from previous versions: Make sure you have the current backup file where you can find it. The disc walks you through uninstalling the old version, converting your old data to the new version standard, and ultimately installing the 2011 version. Review : Internet Explorer 5.0 and 6.0 Users BEWARE
I have been a long time user of TurboTax. NEVER AGAIN. While loading TurboTax 2001 from CD it force loaded (without asking me yes or no) IE 5.5 . This load terminated abnormally and clobbered my Windows 98 system. When I tried to reboot, my system would not come up due to page faults in explorer.exe module. I'm running IE 5.0 as my browser and would never casually load a new version of Internet Explorer because of all the hooks into the WIN98 OS. I was not given a choice with TurboTax. I called their help desk and they were NO HELP. After 12 hours on the phone over two days with Microsoft support I was finally able to get my system back by RELOADING WINDOWS 98. While on the phone with MS support I asked if other people were having this problem. My tech said he had worked with a couple of IE 6.0 users who were fouled up because of the forced download of a backlevel (5.5)IE.

I'd be hard pressed to find anyone who hasn't used the Microsoft Office suite, so I can't help but compare iWork to it...and by doing so, I can't help but feel like Office does a lot of things better. That's not to say that iWork is bad, or you can't be productive with it, but I just still feel like I'd prefer to use Office for most of my big document creation projects. Here's everything broken down:

SHORT VERSION OF REVIEW
Get it if you prefer to stay in the Apple environment--it will do pretty much everything you'd ever need out of a document creation app like this. But if you're heavy on document creation and used to Office, I think you'll feel like iWork is quirky at times, and can be annoying/counter-productive.

LONGER VERSION

I've had this 6 months...it's awful. It's like they fired the orignal developers of Office and said...here start new. The there is no continuity from an older version and this has decreased my ability to be productive...odd a it is supposed to be productivity software. Review : Another year of bugs and horrible support
Shame on me for buying this each year. For the third year in a row it has bugs and the support this year is just as bad as the previous ones. My Illinois State return, which I bought online through the federal product, keeps generating late payment charges on my return, despite the fact that taxes aren't due for another month. The wait time to speak to a foreigner on the phone is 60 minutes, and the email support is ludicrous because the people answering the emails take longer than the phone hold queue to respond, and come back with nonsense.

What I love about it. It carries information forward from prior-year returns. It imports Schedule B and Schedule D information. It produces legible documents, something I could never do on my own.

What I hate about it. There are a lot of basically harmless annoyances (e.g. asking for information multiple times; persistently asking whether you `want any fries with that'; telling me that I'm not eligible to e-file because of multiple 8283s (which is fine), but then telling me on final review that there's an error because I haven't entered credit card data to cover an electronic filing charge of $0.00). TurboTax forgets where it's been after you apply updates; your data are still there, but it can give you a moment of panic because it looks like it lost your data. I have used Excel as the primary tool of my consulting practice for the past eight years and can do things with charting that most folks would have no clue how to do. I say this not to boast, but to speak to other experienced users who are considering the switch to Office 2007.

The change from Office 2003 to 2007 is unlike any other upgrade -- it is the most difficult learning (unlearning?) curve I've ever faced. My analogy is to a carpenter where someone changed all his tools (all the settings, all the functionality), and then hid them. That's what '07 Excel is like: you can't find your tools (they aren't where they used to be), and they don't do what they used to do. It is enormously frustrating, and simple tasks (like formatting a chart) that used to take 3 minutes now take hours.

There are some nice new features: conditional formatting has more than 3 choices (yeah), you are no longer limited to 250 columns (yeah), etc; these functionality and capacity...

Review : Incredibly Dumb Pricing
The company I work for upgraded to MS Office Professional 2010. "Surgery100 ADJ" did a nice job on the review of MS Office 2010. I really don't have much to add. But what I will add is that there is not a snowball's chance I will pay such a high price for an upgrade for two reasons: 1. I am satisfied enough with MS Office 2007 and I feel compelled to make a principled stand in not buying this product due to the price. Are the people at Microsoft completely clueless about the current state of the economy? And I don't see the economy getting much better soon. 2. The benefit for the cost is simply not there. After the Vista fiasco, I would think that Microsoft would be more accommodating with their long time customers rather than trying to extort them.

I wish nobody would purchase MS Office 2010 until Microsoft comes to their senses. I know this isn't a good product review; and I fully expect to receive quite a few "Not Helpful's", but having used Office 2010 at work, and...

Review : Norton antivirus for a 2009 Mac Mini
At first, I followed the instructions that came with the disk and clicked on the "install" button and was told that the computer operating system was not compatible with the program. However, I did notice that the disc had a note on it's package that said "Includes version for Mac OS etcetc" (I can't recall the exact numbers but it was my machine's OS) so I looked at the disk contents and discovered that there was a subfolder that had a separate set of install files for the older system. I then clicked on that and all went well!

The program works seamlessly, as it's previous version did. I had uninstalled the previous version before installing this one just to make life easier in case of conflict, and everything worked.

The one criticism I would have for Norton is that the auto-install facility should direct the user to the older version, which is on the same disk after all, rather than simply say that it was incompatible and cause a good deal of frustration...

I have been using Norton Antivirus/Internet security for years now (on 3 PCs running XP) and the big turn around for the past few years with 'light' software has been great. Most times, issues have been due to non-removal of other/earlier versions of Norton software.

Installation: The recent improvements in installation are continuing to be great. I was able to upgrade from NIS2010 to 2011 in under 2 minutes. If you still have license period left from your previous installation, choose to upgrade using Norton upgrade option (You'll get pop-up notice or check Support - Check new version/product update). If you upgrade using the disc, it will over-write your existing license period (doesn't make sense, but that is the case here). However, after internet upgrade, you can enter the license code from the disc to extend the license for another year (just before your license period expires). Review : Moving from Office 2003, this is a really big deal.
I'm coming from OLD versions of these applications. I'm ashamed to say I was still using a version of Word 2002 on one of my computers...Yikes! I've been using Mozilla's excellent (and free) Thunderbird client for many years.

So the standout here for me, is Outlook. I honestly can't figure how I ever effectively used email before. If you've ever tried to configure Thunderbird for gmail access using either POP or IMAP, it is a multi-step process (by multi, I mean like 22 steps) to get to the end. Complete with re-mapping ports, changing TLS and server configurations, the whole deal. I could always get it to work, eventually, and once it's set, it just works after that. You only had to go through that process once. But since I do OS re-installs somewhat regularly, I had to go through this Thunderbird "initialization" process many, many times.

I have purchased TurboTax for years. For the 2006 tax year, the premier version is $64.95 at Amazon plus $29.90 for e-filing. (No rebates for e-filing this year.) The Taxcut 2006 is 49.95 for the same features and the e-filing is included! TurboTax with e-filing is almost twice as much (94.85 vs 49.95) as compared to TaxCut with e-filing included. I am switching to TaxCut this year.

The look and feel of the software is pretty much the same as last year. However, navigating through the return is a little cumbersome. They try to dumb down the product so much that the user is pretty much forced to go through the interview screens. It is a pain to go to specific areas to input or edit because they keep taking you back to the canned interview screens for those sections. They should give the user the choice of doing a down and dirty input or using their guided entry. The disk comes with the DeductionPro program which in my opinion is a waste of downloading time. The only added benefit it provides is giving values for household items donated to charity. I don't know why TaxCut doesn't just incorporate the "program" into the tax return preparation and just make it seamless for the user.

They could also improve on the final error check process. They show errors and warnings. When you review a warning, there is no link directly to the fix. I ended up...
